Export Capabilities
Single Build Resolution
This is the maximum supported resolution for building a single chunk (untiled) terrain.
1024 x 1024
4096 x 4096
8192 x 8192
8192 x 8192
Tiled Build Resolution
With Tiled Builds, you can split a terrain into multiple chunks and build large scale worlds at any resolution.
2,097,152 ^2
2,097,152 ^2
Split Single Build to Tiles
When building a single chunk terrain, the output can be optionally split into tiles for consumption in realtime engines or DCC applications.
Save as heightfield
Export terrains in 32-bit, 16-bit, and 8-bit formats including OpenEXR, TIFF, RAW, etc.
Save as Point Cloud
Export terrains, masks, or data as an XYZ point cloud, which can be useful for generative guides in other applications such as growing trees, or creating zones in game engines.
Save as Mesh
Export terrains as meshes with automatic LODs in OBJ and FBX formats.
Automatic LODs
When exporting, you can choose the number of LODs to generate alongside the main high resolution mesh.
Adaptive Meshes
Control polygon complexity based on terrain shapes.
Advanced Tooling
Powerful Primitives
Instead of dealing with Noise nodes, you can directly use Primitives such as Mountain, Ridge, Dunes, Crater, and more. These nodes provide shapes that can look good without any erosive processing.
Import Files
Gaea can import 2D data in almost all common heightfield formats ranging from OpenEXR to PNG. Just drag and drop a compatible file on the graph and Gaea will set up the rest.
Fluvial and Thermal Erosion Simulation
Harness the most powerful erosion system in the industry to craft your terrains.
Thermal Shaping
Art-direction friendly filter that simulates thermal erosion in a simple, uniform manner.
Draw Masks and Shapes
Paint masks for terrains using a mouse or stylus.
LookDev Nodes
Achieve complete, sophisticated environments from simple shapes with these specialized nodes. Each LookDev node targets a specific type of "look", reducing the need for you to custom build a processing network. You can even chain multiple LookDev nodes to create terrains with a precise, art-directed character.
Adjustments and Filters
Use a wide array of helper nodes to modify your shape and make adjustments with very little effort.
Rock Tools
Infuse rocky surfaces and loose rocks into your terrains.
Snow and Ice
Create realistic precipitation effects, such as snow with powerful and accurate physics, or physical structures like ice floes.
Lakes and Sea Nodes
Create physically accurate water bodies that can be exported as separate elements or as part of your terrain heightfield.
River and Hydrology Nodes
Create physically accurate river systems and automatically modify terrains to promote better hydrological features.
Arboreal Nodes
Create distant trees that can be used for previewing, or distant terrains.
Seamless + Repeat Nodes
Create seamless maps, and optionally repeat them within your terrain.
Erosion Studio / Directed Erosion
Sculpt erosion by hand in 1:1 resolution using unique tools pioneered by Gaea.
Save disabled
Turntable Animator
Create impressive animations right within Gaea to show off your terrains.
Heal terrain data
Reconstitute 8-bit or visually damaged data using the Heal node. It can even counter JPEG artifacts.
Color Production
Data Maps
Generate rainfall, water flow, sedimentation, and various other types of data. You can even generate data after-the-fact on existing terrains, including satellite elevation models. Data Maps are a powerful aspect of Gaea. Their primary use is texture generation, but they can just as easily be used to further process the terrain and even drive other nodes in the form of influence masks.
Texture Generators
Advanced one-click texture mask generators let you create sophisticated textures in no time. They can be used on their own or combined with Data Maps.
1200+ SatMap Library
SatMap color presets built from real world satellite data curated by terrain experts.
Light Node
The Light Node uses Gaea's proprietary heightfield render engine to create crisp shadows and lighting. You can create beautiful, realtime renders in the viewport to showcase your terrain, or bake the lighting into texture maps. Physical components such as AO and Shadows can be extracted from the lighting output, and can be used to drive other aspects of your terrain, such as melting snow in sunlit portions.
Sunlight Integral
Capture a composite light/shadow map of a large period up to a whole year. Use it to drive erosion, snow melt, or vegetation growth.
Cartography Node
Turn any terrain into a topographical map with customizable graphics and color schemes. You can create elaborate maps with the Cartography node.
Workflow Conveniences
Advanced Graph Workflow
Gaea's advanced graph based workflow is the key to creating sophisticated terrains. This open-ended workflow gives you the flexibility to create almost any kind of results you want.
Post Process Stack
Apply frequently used adjustments to a node as a post-process, saving you the need to add and manage additional nodes.
Multi-monitor support
Move the viewport to a second screen for maximum preview coverage.
Predictive Services
Gaea's internal (and fully local) Predictive Service learns your node creation and connection patterns as you work, and modifies the UI to give you faster access to the nodes and portals you prefer.
Portals
Use portal nodes to connect distant nodes without having to endure long, unsightly connections.
Chokepoints
The Chokepoint is a special node whose sole purpose is to help avoid re-connecting several nodes. It does not add any memory overhead.
Graph Conveniences
The highly flexible graph interface allows you to reduce the number of clicks and actions required to use nodes.
Interject + Interdict Nodes
Easily interject a node between connections or reroute existing connections with a single click.
MultiMix
Combine two or more nodes with the easy F8 shortcut.
Auto Layout
Automatically layout the graph, or portions thereof, using intelligent layout rules.
Presets + Save Node State
Save node settings as presets and easily consume presets made by other users. Save node states temporarily so you can experiment.
Import/Export Graphs
Import or export the whole graph, or even parts of it, to share across projects or with fellow artists.
Building Capabilities
Use all CPU cores
Gaea does not restrict how many CPU cores you can use.
Bake Nodes
Baked nodes can display previews at higher resolution than your normal preview, while allowing you to work with the current lower resolution previews for the rest of the graph. Bake resolution is limited to the highest single tile resolution of your edition.
Build Mutations
Gaea provides a mutation facility during build to create multiple variations of the same terrain. This gives you a unique terrain in every mutation while still following the core recipe of your graph.
Extend + Automate
Expose Parameters
Expose individual node parameters as variables for automation.
Automation
Automate builds using exposed parameters and other facilities provided by the Build Swarm.
TORX File Format
Save terrains in the .NET friendly XML format. With this open format, you can modify and automate any element.
Bridge to other apps**
Connect to other DCC applications and game engines using bridge/link applications.
Build custom bridges
Create a bridge to Gaea from any application.
